Preparing to Eat
December 3, 2006
In this week’s column I wrote about preparing for the Christmas day meal. In doing research for the column, I also asked some of my friends how they prepare for the holiday feasting: preparing for consumption. Without “outing” them, here are some of the things they said:
“I join a weight-loss program to make space for all the new weight to go.”
“Deliberate shopping for pants with elastic waists is always a bad sign.”
“Go on a fish diet.”
“Clean out the system – epson salts and senna pods.”
“Stop drinking sweet drinks & alcoholic beverages two weeks before…”
“Stay away from all meats.”

I was just reading an article from the Food Network website that looked at preparing for holiday meals, more specifically for that significant meal to be had on Christmas day. It suggests that you read cookbooks, search the web, clip magazines and newspapers for recipes that sound good etc.
It strikes me that that sort of planning has to take place long before December as there are so many other things to be done already: social events to attend and host, shopping for gifts and cards, decorating the home (and office for some people) and a whole lot of other stuff. And when you have children, well that’s another ball game altogether. The bottom line is that you really have to be an organiser to get through the holidays.

Christmas meals don’t mean that much to me. It strikes me that people make a big deal about this one meal. It can never live up to the hype.

I lived in mortal fear of the shilling that was supposed to be in the Christmas pudding. I wanted to find it, but I didn’t want to choke to death on it.
